Send off from Everest base camp clinic alumnus Dr. Gee
Feb 27, 2004 10: 20 EST
This week I was visited by Dr. Brian Gee, who helped me set up our inaugural clinic last spring. Although we've emailed and have spoken on the phone, the last time we saw each other was when Brian was walking out of base camp last April. We spent some time reminiscing -- I recalled that at his departure last year, I was uncertain about the future of our clinic -- we were knee-deep in equipment trouble, challenged with keeping our power supply steady, and we'd already blown up or burned a few of our radios with our defunct generator. Well, we were able to reminisce with smiles, as we know some timely solar panel donations from the NASA research group saved the day and all turned out well.
We did this reminiscing on camera, as a Discovery documentary is in the offing. In the last days before departing for Nepal, a production company has begun filming a documentary about this clinic project. I've spent hours recounting our recent history -- it was nice to have someone else mic-up and answer some questions for a change!
Dr. Gee helped me troubleshoot a few of the new equipment challenges as I pack them up for the big jouney in 2 weeks. Although Brian will not be returning to Everest this season, he'll be with us in spirit. And it gave me a chance to say thanks again, Brian, for all your help and energy devoted to this project.
