Summit push
image story

May 14, 2007 12: 23 EST
Today many of the climbers moved to begin their summit push, heading up the icefall for the last time this season. Although the weather is notoriously difficult to predict, it is hoped that there will be a window of calm weather a few days from now, allowing the climbers to reach the top of Mount Everest. The hopeful summiteers are heading up to advanced basecamp where they will rest, follow the weather and make final plans for ascent. In the meantime the final ropes to the top are being fixed.

Down here at the clinic we are still primarily seeing GI related problems (see dispatch May 10.) We are still seeing the ever-present Khumbu cough and last night a rather nasty case of snowblindness in a climber who neglected to wear sunglasses in the icefall. We will be able to stay in contact with those up the mountain and provide medical consultation support from here via radio.

We are hoping that all the climbers remain well, avoid frostbite and altitude illness and get to the top and back down safely.
