On the trail
Jan 12, 2008 23: 20 EST
We're on the trail up to Phortse for the Khumbu Climbing school; today some instructors off climbing a monstrous ice route just across from Namche while the rest of us enjoy a dayhike in the sunny hills.
We had a great hike up the Namche hill yesterday with a pristine view, my first of 2008, of our friend Chomolungma (photo left.)
Yesterday we arrived in our lodge and in the middle of lunch were surprised to see a Japanese hiker looking very ill, his guides applying oxygen. He had followed a reasonable ascent profile, but had unfortunately ascended with symptoms of nausea and headache. He developed a case of HACE, which his guide luckily recognized when he noticed his "drunk walking" and immediately descended to Namche. Our team sprang into action, rounded up some dexamethasone and monitored his condition through the evening. I'm happy to say he felt completely recovered and was able to get down the hill very early this morning. He was so grateful that he made a donation to our EBC clinic. Read more about HACE and altitude sickness to your left.
Tomorrow on to Phortse and the beginning of the medical class for the Khumbu Climbing school. We're psyched!
