Life in Pheriche

The photo to the top left is the Everest Memorial that sits in front of the HRA clinic in Pheriche. Erected by Everest Memorial Trust, a nonprofit in the UK, the structure pays tribute to all who have lost their life on Everest. The plaques inside include the name and date of death and are a chilling reminder of the risks undertaken climbing on Chomolungma (the Sherpa name for Everest, the goddess they believe resides within.)
On the trail in we heard accounts of many serious cases of altitude illness in trekkers, one ending in death from HACE (a trekker unable to descend from Tengboche due to deep snows several weeks ago.) Last night in Pheriche clinic two lowland Nepali were hospitalized after descent from EBC with HACE. Because they recognized the early signs of HACE (ataxia, or wobbling “drunken” gait) and descended quickly, the doctors were able to effectively treat with steroids and oxygen and both were fully recovered in the morning to descend further.
On the brighter side, it’s calving season for the yaks here in Pheriche and we saw a proud cow with her day old calf (lower photo) wandering the paths of the village yesterday. They are simply adorable.
Today Suzanne and Ola will take to the trail for an acclimatization hike in the shadows of Ama Dablam to the charming village of Chukkung followed by a climb to Chukkung Ri. Luanne is off up the trail to Lobuche – we’ll all reunite to set up the clinic at EBC in a few days.
