Kitchen crash ...
Apr 21, 2007 21: 00 EST
We were reminded a couple of days ago how precarious life on a glacier can be. Around 4 o’clock in the afternoon our camp were startled by the sound of what we thought was just another rock fall—but much too close. Coming out of the medical tent we saw that the end wall of our kitchen/dining room, which was built of dry stacked rock, had collapsed in. Fortunately the only casualties were a stove, several pots and all our water thermoses. A crowd quickly collected and many hands helped to rebuild the shelter. The ice under the end wall must have melted with the warmth of the kitchen causing shifting of the scree underneath and so instability of the wall. Looking up at the ice fall afterwards we again thought of the risks of living and climbing in a land of ice and sun.
