Helipad set up in EBC
Apr 9, 2007 11: 00 EST
2007 was no different from the past -- our friends at IMG led the way helping the EBC clinic search out and build a helipad for EBC. We knew we had to act quickly, as EBC was filling up, and a relatively flat piece of real estate was looking good to a few camps ready to set up. But finding a suitable site for helicopter landing is tough in this landscape; we need to be mindful of not only a pad that will allow a ship with limited lift to take off, but of an optimal 100 ft landing zone, taking off into the wind and far enough away from camps to keep wind damage from affecting nearby camps.
So the call went out, and at least 30 Sherpa armed with iceaxes and shovels (and a few westerners too) set out to level an appropriate landing zone. We all hope we wont need to use it, but we're happy to know its ready in the event of a serious emergency. Thanks IMG!
